Green Team
Here at Northeastern University, Dining Services strives to continually become greener and more sustainable by implementing programs to create a “Greener” campus. We are very proud of our efforts and accomplishments to date and will continue to seek out ways to contribute to a greener campus. We received an A on the 2011 College Sustainability Report Card, made the Princeton Review's “2011 Green Rating Honor Roll”, and we have the first campus dining facility to operate two 3-Star Certified Green Restaurants within a LEED Gold Certified structure in the U.S. Even though Northeastern Dining has achieved many accolades it became apparent that most of the NU community was unaware of our accomplishments.
To spread the word of our Green accomplishments Dining Services decided to create a Green Team. The Green Team is made up of three members, each a representative of a different part of campus. Green education tabling events were set up numerous times each semester at each dining location during different day parts. “Compost Here” signage, explaining items that can be composted at the green compost bins, Green is RESPECT signage, an acronym explaining the definition of being Green, Be Green refillable Mug and reusable Bag program signage, explaining where we sell refillable mugs and bags, a display of local apples for decoration and for snacks, to help engage the NU community and finally a small display of locally grown products we serve everyday.
The Green Team set up the display table near the green compost bins so they could engage the NU community as they walked by with their empty trays. Everyone who composted, or at least listen to what they should compost next time, got candy. To make the event more fun the Green Team incorporated a “Wheel of Green”, anyone interested in learning more and winning a prize could step up to the wheel give it a spin and answer a Green trivia question. Green trivia question included basic facts about how Northeastern is Green, what produces we serve, and what steps we take to stay Green. The prizes range from candy to Green bags, to Green mugs, to Green compost t-shirt to donated Green Coca-Cola products. All participants had fun, learn knew things, and could not wait to find the Green Team at the next location.
